Asmodeus: Demonology, History, and Ritual Tradition
Asmodeus
Etymology and Origins
Asmodeus (Hebrew: אַשְׁמְדַאי, Greek: Ἀσмоδαῖος, Latin: Asmodeus) is one of the central figures in Abrahamic demonology. Most scholars derive the name from the Avestan Aēšma-daēva (“Demon of Wrath”), suggesting Zoroastrian roots and its entry into Jewish tradition during the period of Persian influence (6th–4th centuries BCE).
Biblical and Apocryphal Sources
- The Book of Tobit: The first canonical mention occurs in Tobit (3:8), where Asmodeus kills the seven husbands of Sarah on their wedding nights. He was eventually driven to Upper Egypt by the Archangel Raphael using the smoke from a fish’s liver and heart.
- The Talmud: In Gittin (68a–b), Asmodeus (Ashmedai) is depicted as the King of Demons whom King Solomon captured through trickery to assist in building the First Temple. After freeing himself, the demon cast Solomon across the world and briefly usurped his throne.
- The Book of Enoch: This and other pseudepigrapha link him to the class of spirits born from the union of the Watchers (fallen angels) and mortal women.
Asmodeus in Medieval Demonology
In the Lesser Key of Solomon (Lemegeton, 17th century), specifically in the Goetia, Asmodeus is ranked as the 32nd Spirit and holds the title of King. He is described as having three heads: the first of a bull, the second of a man, and the third of a ram. He has the tail of a serpent, webbed feet like a goose, and breathes fire. He rides an infernal dragon and carries a spear with a banner.
His domains include:
- Lust and the destruction of marriages.
- Gambling and lotteries.
- Mathematics, geometry, astronomy.
- Mechanical arts and secret crafts.
The Ritual of the Mirror Gates
A Traditional Ceremony adapted for the Solitary Practitioner from the Anti-Cosmic Tradition.
In modern Anti-Cosmic Satanism (MLO), Asmodeus is viewed as the ruler of the Qliphah Ga’asheblah (The Smiters). This ritual is performed during the New Moon to open a “Qliphothic Tunnel” through a mirror, allowing the lone operator to channel the energies of the Dark Lord.
Preparations and Tools
- The Altar: Placed in the North of the ritual space.
- Altar Cloth: A cloth made of natural fabric featuring the sigil of Asmodeus is used to cover the altar and anchor the energy. (You can purchase a ritual altar cloth with the sigil here: Asmodeus Altar Cloth)
- The Mirror: A rectangular mirror placed on the altar to serve as the “Mirror Gate.”
- Offerings: Musk incense and two black candles.
- The Sacrifice: The operator cuts their left hand, letting 11 drops of blood fall into a chalice to empower the rite.
- Talisman: A pendant with the Sigil of Asmodeus, worn throughout the ceremony.
The Rite of Opening
I. The Blood Offering
Using the fresh blood, trace the Sigil of Asmodeus upon the mirror while vibrating his name. Anoint the two black candles with the remaining blood. Pour any residue onto the glowing coals in the censer to release the life-force. Cast a heavy pinch of musk incense onto the coals.
II. The Invocation
Light the two black candles. With a ritual dagger, draw a Black Invoking Pentagram in the air before the mirror, vibrating: ASMODEUS.
The Magician declares:
“Asmodeus Liftoach Kliffot! Glory to Asmodeus!”
Visualize the pentagram sinking into the mirror, turning the glass into a swirling black void.
The Formulas of Calling
1. The First Formula
“Asmodeus Ador Cameso Valuerituf Mareso!”
“In the name of Satan, Lord Asmodeus, be with me! Powerful Asmodeus, let the shadow of your black wings fall upon me and grant me the demonic power I need to perform my black rituals!”
2. The Second Formula
“Asmodeus Lodir Cadomir Aluiel Calniso Tely Plorim!”
“Lord of dark eroticism and sadistic desires, let your anti-cosmic energy destroy the weaknesses of my soul! Fill me with your evil and elevate me as your chosen warrior!”
3. The Third Formula

“O mighty Lord, legendary for your bloodlust, hear my call! Father of incest and sodomy, black-winged angel of suicide, I invoke you!”
4. The Fourth Formula

“Asmodeus, in the name of Satan, turn the key, activate the gate, and enter from the realm of black shadows through the Qliphothic tunnel!”

The Opening of the Tunnel

Asmodeus Viordy Cureviorbas Cameron Vesturiel!
Asmodeus Volnavij Benez Meus Calmiron Noard!

Asmodeus, Come!”
When the presence is felt, declare:
“The Ruler of the Qliphah Ga’asheblah is now with me! Glory to Asmodeus!”
The License to Depart
“In the name of Satan, Lord Asmodeus, I thank you for your presence. Go in peace to your infernal abode. In the name of the Father+, the Son+, and the Holy Spirit of Darkness+, it is done. Amen.”
